What is laser light therapy?
Laser therapy is the use of invisible high wavelength light in rapid pulses to treat a problem or boost healing.
What does a laser look like?
See that small black & silver box in the photo to the right- thats my laser. Small, portable, non frightening to treat children and animals with ;-)
What does a laser do?
The effect of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is to :
- Stimulate cells to produce their own endorphins, a natural pain killer, thus reducing pain
- Stimulate cells to increase the production of healing enzymes, promoting faster healing.
- Reduce inflammation
- Increase bone repair speed by increasing production of fibroblasts and osteoblasts
- Relax muscles and muscle spasms,
- Stimulating lymphatic drainage which decreases swelling,
- Enhances the immune system by increasing the number of "killer" cells
- Provides better cellular nutrition by allowing transport of essential nutrients across cell membrane walls
Where can LLLT be used?
Laser light is often used to boost wound healing after operations, or any place there is chronic pain or inflammation. Some of the conditions I might laser people for are back pain, neck pain, tennis elbow, arthritis, shoulder problems, achilles tendons, plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute sports injuries. I can attest to its effectiveness in easing toothache and to helping feet that have had stumps dropped on them ...
Animals I treat tend to be more things like dogs with cruciate ligament tears- those both surgically and non surgically treated. Dogs with arthritis, slipped epiphysis, elbow or hip dysplasia. Horses with leg injuries, cats recovering from trauma or surgery. Not forgetting the lambs with broken legs, alpacas with arthritis, calves with leg injuries and foals with leg contractures !
Can I use laser with other treatments?
Yes, generally you can, laser gets on well with them. Because I provide a treatment service, not a diagnostic one, you do however need to see your doctor if you have a health problem. Once you have a diagnosis, then you can contact me to arrange a treatment session.
Are lasers dangerous?
Lasers are categorised as NSR (non significant risk) devices. However laser should not be used in pregnancy, on pain of unknown cause, on cancerous lesions, over tattoos, or on areas of infection.
What would I feel during a laser treatment session?
Generally, you feel nothing. Occasionally you might feel a slight sense of vibration or warmth in the tissues. Because it doesn't hurt, laser is very useful for treating children and animals.
How many treatments would be needed?
This will vary depending on what is being treated and how the client responds to treatment. Generally 3-4 treatments would be the average, but it could also be less.
Do lasers have side effects?
Sometimes, infrequently, a client may experience a mild worsening of pain after the first treatment, which is indicative of a healing reaction. This will subside usually within 24 hours and the next treatment session is uneventful.
